Maria “DjeDje” Pires Mendes, 84, of Sterry St., Pawtucket, passed away peacefully Palm Sunday, April 14, 2019 at the Miriam Hospital. She was the wife of the late Viriato Mendes and the late Manuel Pires.

Born June 6, 1934, in Brava, Cabo Verde, she was a daughter of the late Jose Joao Pereira and the late Maria Turibio Pires. She loved her family and was happiest when she gathered them together to share meals, loved cooking, making people laugh with her jokes, and was known to tend beautiful flower and vegetable gardens. She was a talented seamstress for many years, and had lived in New Jersey, Boston and Pawtucket.

She was the sister of Angelica DeBarros with whom she lived, the late John J. Pereira and the late Ana Vincente; and the aunt of Edith DeBarros, Liz DeBarros, Jack Pereira, Joann Peareara, Joseph Pereira, Katia Pereira and of the late George Burgo.

Her funeral will begin Wednesday, April 17, at 9am from the Rebello Funeral Home and Crematory, 901 Broadway, East Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Mary’s Church, 103 Pine St., Pawtucket. Burial will follow at the Mt. St. Mary Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday, April 16, from 5pm until 8pm.
