Armindo M. Nunes, 89, of Pawtucket, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 30th at Evergreen House Health Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Odocea C. Nunes who passed away in January 2015. They had been married for 62 years. Born in Pawtucket on March 30, 1928, he was the son of the late Jose and Albina (Morais) Nunes.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his son, Maj. Fernando J Nunes, US Army (Ret), and his brothers Albert and George Nunes.
He is survived by his son Alberto (Al) Nunes and his wife Gail of Pawtucket, his daughter Madalena (Maddie) Josephs and her husband John of Rumford and his daughter-in-law Donna Nunes of Yorktown, VA. He leaves 8 grandchildren: Nicholas and Michael Nunes, Sr. Mary Karolyn, FSGM (Alyssa), Sr. Maria Fatima, OP (Ann Marie) and Alan M. Nunes, Andrew Josephs, Lindsay Josephs Thompson and Lauren Josephs, and two great-grandchildren, Julianna and David Nunes. He also leaves many loving nieces and nephews.
He served in the United States Army, stationed in South Korea and was honorably discharged in 1952. He was a faithful communicant of St. Anthony’s Church in Pawtucket, serving as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist and spent many hours as a volunteer at Memorial Hospital of RI. He was a past president of St. Anthony’s Holy Name Society, a member of the Holy Ghost Society and was one of the founders of St. Anthony’s Bread Society. In addition, he was a member of the Clube Social Portugues, Uniao Portuguesa Beneficente, the Amigos de Cavaqueiras, Grupo Amigos da Terceira, Seven Castles Club of the Blackstone Valley, Portuguese American Citizens Committee and the E.L. Freeman Lodge.
He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 94 and worked at the former L. Vaughn Company in Warwick and Modern Industries in Providence, Installing architectural millwork in buildings throughout the country. In addition, he was a skilled mechanic, installing and repairing countless pool tables throughout New England.
He was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word and was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who took exceptional pride and joy in his family. His loss is immeasurable.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony’s Church, Lawn Ave. Pawtucket, on Saturday, August 5th at 10am. Burial, with military honors, immediately following at Mt. St. Mary’s Cemetery, Pawtucket. Visitation will be on Friday from 4pm-8pm at the Rebello Funeral Home, 901 North Broadway, East Providence. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations in his name be sent to the St. Anthony’s Bread Society (Food Pantry), 32 Lawn Ave., Pawtucket, RI 02860.
