Ramona Marrier Obituary

Ramona Nicholas (Damos) Marrier, 91, formerly of Rumford, RI and Falmouth, MA, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2024 at Catholic Memorial Home in Fall River, MA with her family by her side.

Ramona was born in Braintree, MA on June 7, 1932, the daughter of the late Nicholas Peter Damos and Mary Vieira Damos. She was a graduate of St. Patrick’s High School, Providence, RI. Ramona was an avid tournament Life Master bridge player along with her husband, traveling mostly in New England. She became a Life Master with the American Contract Bridge League in 1974 and achieved Ruby Life Master status in 2016. She was also a member of the RI Bridge Club Association.  Ramona loved music and loved to dance!  She and her husband took square dance lessons in the 1960s. They jitter-bugged their way on the dance floor at every opportunity, especially at weddings! Ramona was the first to get on the floor to line-dance, The Hustle.

She was known for her many friends, her love of family, and her quick wit, infectious laugh, determination, and persistence. In 1954, Ramona traveled to the Alaskan Territory, relocating for two years with her first child Nancy, to be with her husband who was transferred there while serving in the US Coast Guard. While traveling on this journey, Ramona experienced a turbulent plane ride, re-circling airports and experiencing a few attempts to fly over mountains. Upon relocating back home to Rhode Island in 1956, and while pregnant with her second child, Stephen, Ramona experienced turbulent weather again. She said, “This is a sign…always go with your intuition!” She vowed never to step off land again! Thereafter, she traveled only by automobile, even despite leaving Rhode Island for many winters in Siesta Key, Florida.

Ramona had a long and stellar career as a Medical Transcriptionist at Memorial Hospital of RI and also for several prominent Rhode Island physicians. She worked as the Office Manager and Bookkeeper for Marrier Surveying, Inc, a professional land surveying company founded in 1984 and owned by her late husband of 67 years, Joseph A. Marrier Jr., a former Member (1990-99) and Chairman (1993-95) of the Rhode Island State Board of Registration for Professional Land Surveyors.

Ramona leaves four children, Nancy Phetteplace and her wife Sharon LeBlanc of Warwick, RI, Stephen Marrier and his wife Ann of Sarasota, FL, David Marrier and his wife Crissy of Wilton, NH, and Susan Lake and her husband David of Riverside, RI; 12 grandchildren, Jessica, Bethany, J.B., Kathryn, David, Allison, Dan, Michael, Nicholas, Christopher, Brian, and Autumn; 16 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late US Army Chief Warrant Officer Albert Rose (Ft. Monroe, VA), Milton William Ferris, Jr. (Wakefield, RI) Edward Anthony Ferris (Providence, RI), and Louise Mary (Damos) O’Brien (Wilmington, NC), all of whom predeceased her.

Her funeral, to which relatives and friends are most warmly invited, will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, beginning with a time for visitation from 12:30 to 1:30 PM in the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence, RI, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated in her honor by the Reverend Joseph Escobar at 2:00 PM in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 21 Traverse Street, Providence, RI. Interment will be held privately in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, RI, at which time Ramona will be laid to rest with her late husband, Joseph.
