Maria Soares Obituary

East Providence - Maria R. (Sousa) Soares, 73, affectionately known as Maria, departed from this world on March 5, 2024, at Hope Hospice in Providence, RI. Born on November 11, 1950, in Sao Miguel, Azores, Maria was a beacon of love and warmth to all who knew her. She shared a beautiful and enduring love story with her husband, Antonio Manuel Soares, to whom she was married for 54 blissful years.

Maria was the cherished daughter of the late Antonio and Maria (Conceicao) Sousa. She was a devoted mother to Patricia Gonsalves and her husband Paul of Bristol, RI; Paul Soares and his wife Lisa of Rumford; Francisco Soares of Bristol; and Christina Soares of Sacramento, CA. Maria's spirit lives on through her beloved siblings, Loudrous Pereira, Jacinto Sousa, and Luis Sousa, all of Portugal. She was the adored grandmother of Alyssa, Kyle, Olivia, and Tyler Soares, and a dear aunt to many nieces and nephews.

For over 35 years, Maria was a dedicated machine operator at the A & H Jewelry Manufacturing Company. Her tireless work ethic and resilient spirit were an inspiration to her colleagues. Even after her well-deserved retirement, Maria's influence continued to resonate within the company and among her peers.

A woman of deep faith, Maria was a devoted parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life and guided her through every challenge and triumph. Maria's selfless nature was evident in her everyday actions and the way she cared for her family and friends. She was the embodiment of love and the true matriarch of her family.

Maria's interests were as rich and varied as her personality. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life: crocheting, solving crosswords and puzzles, and listening to Portuguese music. Maria relished the tranquility of sitting by the ocean, a reminder of her Azorean roots and the vast journey of her life. An excellent cook, Maria's kitchen was the heart of her home, where laughter, aromas, and stories mingled to create lasting memories.

Maria's legacy is one of a loving, selfless, and faith-filled life. She touched the hearts of many and will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Her life was a tapestry of love and devotion, woven with the threads of kindness and compassion. Maria R. (Sousa) Soares will be remembered as a guiding light, a source of unwavering support, and a testament to the enduring power of faith and family.

As we bid farewell to Maria, we celebrate her remarkable journey and the profound impact she had on those around her. Her life was a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the capacity for love. Maria's family takes comfort in knowing that her legacy will continue to shine through the lives of those she loved so dearly.

In honor of Maria's life and spirit, we recall the words of Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, "Para viajar basta existir." ("To travel, one simply needs to exist.") Maria's journey continues beyond the horizon, as her spirit embarks on the ultimate voyage, leaving behind a wake of love and cherished memories. Her journey on earth may have concluded, but her story will be recounted and celebrated for generations to come.

Her funeral will be held on Monday March 11,2024 at 8:30am from the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Francis Xavier Church, 81 North Carpenter Street, East Providence.
