Maria Lourdes (De Melo) Lopes

Maria Lourdes (deMelo) Lopes, known fondly as Senhora Lourdes, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2023, at the age of 90, at the Evergreen House Nursing Home in East Providence. Born on May 17, 1933, in Sao Miguel, Azores, Maria was the beloved wife of the late Guilherme P. Lopes and the cherished daughter of the late Jose De Melo and Idalina (da Silva) De Melo.

Maria was a devoted mother to her five children, Maria G. Rodrigues and her husband Duarte, Maria J. Arruda and her husband Jaime, Luisa DeBarros and her husband Mario of Seekonk, Jose Manuel Lopes and his wife Lisa, and Nelia De Lima and her husband Pedro, all of East Providence. She was a loving grandmother to 11 grandchildren, a proud great-grandmother to 8 great-grandchildren, and a doting great-great-grandmother to 3 great-great-grandchildren. Maria is also survived by 7 nieces and nephews. She was the dear sister of the late Luis Melo and Eugenio Melo.

Maria was a woman of faith and a dedicated parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church. She was known for her generosity, often using her skills as an excellent seamstress to help those in her community. Maria’s loving nature was evident in her passion for cooking, often preparing meals that brought her family together. However, her favorite activity was being a grandmother and great-grandmother. The time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was cherished and will be remembered fondly.

Maria was a woman of many qualities, but above all, she was loving, generous, and faith-filled. She had a heart full of love for her family, a generous spirit that made everyone feel welcome, and a faith that was unshakeable. Maria was a beacon of light in the lives of many and her legacy will live on through the values she instilled in her children and grandchildren.

Maria will be remembered as a woman of resilience, who faced life’s challenges with grace and faith. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, but her spirit will continue to inspire and guide her family. She will be remembered for her warmth, her laughter, and the love she had for her family and friends.

Maria Lourdes (deMelo) Lopes was a woman of exceptional character, whose life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and generosity. Her memory will forever be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 8:30am from the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Francis Xavier Church, 81 North Carpenter Street, East Providence.

Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail East Providence.
