Jose` M. Ponte

East Providence – José Martins Ponte, 82, of East Providence, passed away peacefully at home, on Monday, May 23, 2022, surrounded by his family.

He was the husband of Maria Evelina (Favela) Ponte.  José was born in São Miguel, Azores, the son of the late Augusto and Maria dos Anjos (Mota) da Ponte.

He was the Cobrador de Agua for the Camara Municipal Lagoa in São Miguel for 11 years.

Mr. Ponte came to the United States with his wife and son in 1976, where he then worked as a machine operator for Leviton for 27 years.

He was a parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Church. Jose enjoyed and took great pride in his gardening, as well as spending time with his family, including his grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his son John M. Ponte and his wife Nancy of East Providence, and his sister Marcelina da Conceição da Ponte Borges of São Miguel, Azores.

José was the grandfather of Thomas E. McNamee III, Jackson J. Ponte and Sophia M. Ponte. He was also the great grandfather of Audrey N. McNamee and Thomas E. McNamee IV.

Mr. Ponte is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Antonio Augusto da Ponte.

His funeral will be held Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 8:00am from the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00am in St. Francis Xavier Church, 81 North Carpenter Street, East Providence.

Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, East Providence.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling hours are Friday from 4:00-7:00pm at the funeral home.
