East Providence -Eun Hai Shinn,86, affectionately known as John, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2023, at Trinity Health Center in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Born on November 19, 1936, in Ham Hung, Korea, John was a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather, cherished by many.
John was the devoted husband of Bok Chin Cho and the loving son of the late Wegyoon Shinn and Bok Soon Lee. He was the proud father of Paul Shinn of Los Angeles, Allen Shinn of East Providence, and Heidy Shinn Slattengren and her husband Nathan of San Francisco, California. John was the cherished brother of Eun Shik Shin, Eun Tek Shin, Eun Woo Shin, Eun Hang Shin, Hwa Soon Shin, Myung Soon Shin, and Ge Soon Shin. He was also a doting grandfather to Joel Shinn Slattengren.
A proud graduate with a bachelor’s degree, John was a lifelong learner with an insatiable curiosity. He was the successful owner and operator of the former Korea Restaurant, sharing his passion for food with the community. He moved to East Providence in 2018, after many years of residing in Providence, and quickly became a valued member of the community.
John found great joy in his faith, being an active member of the Brethren Fellowship. He had a deep interest in studying the Bible and theology, often engaging in thoughtful discussions with his church community. John’s interests were diverse and wide-ranging. He was an incredible cook, often delighting his family and friends with his delicious creations. His love for conversation was evident, as he would often engage in enlightening discussions on various topics. He was a God- Fearing man and also quite joyful.
John had an impressive knack for languages. Fluent in Korean, English, and German, he was also in the process of learning Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish. His linguistic skills were a testament to his intelligence and dedication to learning. He loved walking, often using this time to practice his language skills or simply enjoy the beauty of nature.
Those who knew John would describe him as intelligent and passionate. His intelligence was not just academic but also emotional, often showing deep understanding and empathy towards others. His passion was evident in everything he did, from his cooking to his language studies. John's radiant personality and zest for life were infectious, leaving a lasting impact on everyone he met.
John's passing is a significant loss to his family, friends, and community. His life, however, will continue to inspire and influence those who were fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of love, passion, and intelligence will live on in the hearts of his loved ones. John's life was a testament to the power of perseverance, love, and dedication. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to live on in all the lives he touched.
His funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at 11:00am in the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence.
