Rumford - Daniel C. Mello, Sr.,83, of Rumford a beloved family man, devoted friend, and dedicated community servant, passed away on August 10, 2023, at Hope Hospice in Providence, Rhode Island. Born in the same city on January 18, 1940, to the late Joseph C. and Mary (Leiter) Mello, Daniel's life was characterized by a profound love for his family, his community, and sports.
Daniel's family was his pride and joy. As the cherished father of Daniel C. Mello, Jr., and his wife Laura of Cranston, and Diane Marie Mello of Rumford, he was a guiding force and a pillar of strength. He was the proud brother of Arthur Mello of Seekonk, Frank Mello of Warren, and the late Joseph Mello, Jr., and the late Edward C. Mello. Daniel was a loving uncle to numerous nieces and nephews, who will remember him for his humor and kindness.
As a grandfather, Daniel's love knew no bounds. He was the doting grandfather of Andrew, Nicole, Danielle, Justin, Arianna, and Schantelle. His legacy will continue to live on through his great-grandchildren Lexie, Adam, Mia, Messiah, Gabrielle, Jordan, and Elyse, who brought him immense joy and happiness.
Daniel's professional life was marked by hard work and dedication. He worked as a truck driver for North Penn Transfer for many years, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his job. His dedication to community service was evident in his role as a Special Police Officer in Seekonk, where he served the community with honor and integrity. Daniel was also a proud US Army Veteran, and his love for his country was evident in his service.
Living in Rumford for over 10 years after moving from Bristol, Daniel was an active member of his community. He was a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, where his faith was a cornerstone of his life.
Daniel's interests were varied and reflective of his vibrant character. A die-hard Boston sports fan, his allegiance to the Red Sox and Bruins was unwavering. His love for sports extended beyond mere fandom, as he enjoyed playing softball and served as a hockey and baseball coach for his son. Daniel also enjoyed watching NASCAR, listening to country music and bands. However, his favorite pastime was spending quality time with his family and grandchildren.
Daniel was a man of many virtues. He was loving, always putting the needs of his family and friends before his own. He was funny, his sense of humor bringing joy and laughter to those around him. He was friendly, his welcoming nature making everyone feel at home.
The passing of Daniel C. Mello, Sr. leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His life was a testament to the power of love, dedication, and service. His memory will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and the community he so faithfully served.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his burial with Military Honors, on Thursday August 31, 2023, at 12:30 pm in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI.
