Daniel Guertin Obituary

Daniel C. Guertin,92, of Providence, known affectionately as Danny, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2024, at Hope Hospice, with his wife holding his hand, while his granddaughter was hugging her. He was surrounded by over 10 friends and family members for the entire week prior to his passing.  Born on December 28, 1931, in Providence, he was a cherished son of the late Louis and Mary (Roach) Guertin. Danny's life was a testament to devotion, service, and joy, a journey that spanned 92 remarkable years.

Danny's heart belonged to his beloved wife Leoncha "Lee" (Bessette) Guertin, with whom he shared over 68 years of marriage filled with mutual support and deep affection. A devoted father, he raised his daughters, Theresa Babbitt, and Renee Fortin, both of Providence, with love and wisdom. His role as a grandfather to Adam and Desiree Babbitt, Daniel and Phillip Doucette was one of his greatest joys, and he was a proud great-grandfather to Manuel, Connor, Lydia, Giovanni, Noah, and Arianys. His passing leaves a void in the large family circle that includes many nieces and nephews who admired and adored him. Danny also leaves a favorite cousin (raised like sister and brother) and best friend Mary & Ralph Campano.

He was the brother of the late Louis Guertin, Edward Guertin, Margaret Winn and Helen Slidkervich

Danny's career with the Providence Police Department spanned 37 years, culminating in his retirement as a Sergeant. His dedication to law and order was matched only by his commitment to his country as a US Navy Veteran, where he honorably served for 4 years during the Korean Conflict. Throughout his life, Danny remained a steadfast resident of Providence, contributing to the community he loved and serving as a parishioner of St. Raymond's Church.

An active man, Danny found joy in the simple pleasure of swimming and was an enthusiastic participant in various sports. He played baseball, softball, and basketball in the police department leagues, where his competitive spirit and sportsmanship were well known. Beyond his athletic pursuits, Danny was an artist at heart, with a talent for painting pictures and drawing that brought beauty to the world and joy to those who knew him.

Upon his retirement, Danny and his wife Lee embraced the warmth of Hollywood and Miami, Florida, during the winter months. There, he indulged in his passion for the serene beauty of lighthouses, a symbol of guidance and steadfastness that reflected his own nature. Danny's interests were a mirror of his character—full of light, life, and a sense of enduring strength.

Described by those who knew him best as loving, kind, and funny, Danny's infectious laughter and warm presence could light up any room. His sense of humor, paired with a profound kindness, made him a beloved figure in the lives of many. Danny's legacy is one of love, laughter, and a life richly lived. His passing is not only a loss to his family but to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

As we bid farewell to Daniel C. Guertin, we celebrate a life that was lived with purpose and joy. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, much like the lighthouses he so admired. While we mourn his departure, we also take comfort in the countless memories and the indelible impact he has left on our hearts.

Danny will be deeply missed by his loving wife Lee, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family, who will strive to honor his legacy by living lives as full and compassionate as his. As we reflect on his life, we are reminded of the countless ways in which he enriched our lives and the world around him. May he rest in peace, knowing that his life was a beacon of love and kindness that will shine on in the hearts of those he touched.
