Providence - Annette Casparis passed away peacefully on Friday, September 8, 2023, age 81, at her home in Providence, RI. Annette was born on June 5, 1942, in Copenhagen, Denmark as the daughter of George Stage and Anna Louise Stage. She lived in Denmark with her three sisters and brother until she immigrated to the States in 1960. Her parents had a high regard for education and encouraged Annette to attend the Albert Schweitzer College in Switzerland. It is here she met her husband, John Casparis.
Both John and Annette immigrated to the United States to attend university. Annette went to Central Michigan University as an undergraduate and got her Master of Social Work Degree from Syracuse University. John went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then earned his PhD at Brown University. They were married in 1962 in Providence, RI. They later moved to Vestal, NY where they had two children: Thomas and Lisa. John was a sociology professor for 35 years at Binghamton University. Annette was a social worker for 30 years, running her own private practice. She had many other pursuits which included being an active member of Habitat for Humanity, quilting, sewing, cooking, and antiquing.
Once there were grandchildren in the picture, John and Annette moved back to Rhode Island to be close to family. She was an active member at the Unitarian Church in Providence. Annette also volunteered at Loaves and Fishes, the Emmanuel House and helped Guatemalan girls attend college.
