Alexandre Fernandes,94, a cherished pillar of the Providence community and a beacon of unwavering love and dedication, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2023, at RI Hospital in Providence, RI. Born on November 8, 1929, in the quaint village of Soajo, Portugal, Alexandre's journey of life was marked by his deep-rooted values and an enduring spirit of generosity.
Alexandre was the devoted husband of the late Hilda (Barros) Fernandes, with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage, a testament to their unbreakable bond and mutual adoration. He was the proud son of the late Alexandre and Rosa (Cabeilero) Fernandes, carrying forward the legacy of his parents with grace and honor. His role as a loving father was exemplified in his sons, Alexandre Fernandes of Providence and Mario Fernandes of Johnston, who will continue to walk in the light of his wisdom and kindness.
His siblings, Albino Fernandes of Montreal, Canada, and Maria Fidalgo of Elizabeth, NJ, remember him as a brother who always extended a helping hand and a warm smile. As a doting grandfather, he cherished every moment spent with his grandson, Aiden Fernandes, instilling in him the values of family and tradition. Alexandre also held a special place in the hearts of his nieces and nephews, Tony, Sandra, Amy, and Tina, each of whom he touched with his loving and handy nature.
For over 20 years, Alexandre was the owner and operator of the former Fernandes Bakery in Providence, where his passion for baking and service left an indelible mark on the community. His entrepreneurial spirit and fervent work ethic were not only the foundation of his business success but also an inspiration to many.
Alexandre's life in Providence spanned more than seven decades, having previously lived in Canada and his native Portugal. He was a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of the Rosary Church, where he found solace and strength in his faith. His interests were as varied as they were rich; he found joy in traveling back to Portugal, where he reconnected with his roots and the land he so loved.
A man of many talents, Alexandre had a green thumb that could bring any garden to life, and his penchant for building things reflected his ability to create and nurture. His love for soccer was well-known, and he could often be found cheering on his favorite team, FC Porto, a passion that was as fervent as his love for his family.
Those who knew Alexandre would describe him as loving, handy, and passionate. He approached life with a heart full of love, hands ready to build and fix, and a soul passionate about every endeavor he undertook. His legacy will live on in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know him and in the community he so selflessly served.
Alexandre's life was a tapestry woven with threads of love, hard work, and devotion. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate the immeasurable impact he made on the lives of all who knew him. His light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of his family, friends, and all the lives he touched.
A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Alexandre Fernandes will be profoundly missed, but the warmth of his love and the strength of his spirit will forever remain a guiding force to all who were blessed to know him. Rest in peace, Alexandre; your story is one of enduring love and legacy. Calling hours and flowers are respectfully omitted.
