EAST PROVIDENCE – Medeiros, Walter J., age 87, a lifelong East Providence resident, died peacefully at home, April 3, 2011, to joyfully re-unite with his wife of over 50 years, the late Agnes H. (Traverse) Medeiros and their son, the late David J. Medeiros.

Born Sept. 23, 1923, in Providence, he was the son of the late Antonio and Arsenia (Lima) Medeiros.

A combat wounded WWII Army Infantry veteran, he was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead for participation in the amphibious and airborne combat assaults in Okinawa and the Purple Heart for injuries received there.

He worked for the US Postal Service before retiring from the City of East Providence.

Walter is survived by his children, Paul A. Medeiros and his wife Connie, of Seekonk, and Judith A. Mumbauer and her husband Daniel, of East Providence; 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

He was the brother of Mary D. Medeiros, with whom he lived, Arsenio "Sam" Medeiros of East Providence, Joseph Medeiros of East Greenwich, and the late Gilbert and Anthony Medeiros.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Thursday at 10am at St. Francis Xavier Church, No. Carpenter St., East Providence. Military honors and burial will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Following Walter's request, calling hours are omitted. Arrangements through REBELLO FUNERAL HOME.
