Dr. Robert Carey Adams of Springfield, VA, peacefully passed away Thursday morning, February 22, 2018 in Charlotte, N.C.

He was born in Staten Island, N.Y. on April 25, 1933. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Patricia Shea Adams, his parents George Edward Adams and Katherine Rita Carey Adams, his brother, Dean, and his sons-in-law, Steve Thomason and Chuck Ringwood. He is survived by his children, Denise Thomason, Michael Adams and his wife Janet, Patricia Ringwood, and Edward Adams and his wife Trish; his twelve grandchildren Joseph, Thomas, Michael, Lisa and Amy Ringwood; Kelly and Patrick Thomason; Ellen and Kevin Adams; and Connor, Shea and Quinn Adams; and one great grandchild, Shane Ringwood.

Bob was raised in Cranston, R.I. and graduated from the University of Notre Dame. He was drafted into the Navy and served as a Lieutenant Commander in Sasebo, Japan where his first daughter was born. He then obtained a Master’s Degree from Notre Dame and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. After completing his doctoral research in Marseilles, France, he became an assistant professor of history at the University of Tennessee. When his wife Pat died in 1976, he and the family moved to West Springfield, Va. where he worked for the Navy and later the National Cancer Institute.

He was a life-long fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, opera, poetry and classical music. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of history and vocabulary. He was a kind, decent man who always thought of others first. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, Providence, R.I.
